~ Poems of Love ~

The following poems have been written by me, for my husband Hamada, who suffered from Multiple Myeloma [IgG Kappa] a cancer of the plasma cells, which are found in the bone marrow. After many months of chemotherapy, contracting pneumonia twice, once given only twelve hours to live and having three bad fractures to his spine and also showing in his Pelvis, he made it to four years seven months. The Multiple Myeloma attacked his Kidneys first showing at diagnosis in May 2006 leaving Hamada only a small percentage of kidney function. He never complained, using his most amazing smile even when I knew he had severe pain. Hamada underwent a Stem Cell Transplant using his own 'harvested stem cells' . During October 2007 he spent seventeen days in the "Centre For Clinical Haematology" at Nottingham City Hospital UK. where he achieved this transplant. We had a scare at six months after transplant, when told 'the beast was back' but subsequent tests showed a partial remission. Again in early 2009 it was confirmed that Hamada was out of remission He fought again during 2010 with newer chemo type drugs. First with Velcade and then with Revlimid but to no avail. His Kidneys were failing further and Hamada chose not to have dialysis. This blog contains poems and updates, written for Hamada, telling of our life together.
Now a beautiful book has been published, see http://www.susiehemingway.com/books/
showing Hamada's personal fight against Multiple Myeloma in the first fifty 'poems of love' written by me his wife. I hope you like these poems of love and also 'our story' dedicated to Hamada, who passed away peacefully at home on 23 November 2010 after a most courageous fight against Multiple Myeloma.

In Quiet Days - by Susie Hemingway

In quiet days as fearsome news
imparted so gently, comes to view,
your face so stoic hardly moves
my accepting warrior, my hero true.

The look that really says it all,
and although you can't, your standing tall,
as beautiful hand is placed on mine,
I bite my lip, as the clock chimes.

Say nothing yet, let's think it through
for actions now will be askew,
decisions made in quiet ways, will pave
for you another day.

The reality that stings my eyes
the sadness as results arrive,
in watchful bide my thoughts of you,
your boldness gallant fighter true.

In quiet days of misty cold
our world is smaller, but not letting go,
this 'beast' that creeps within our realm,
will, with courage, be crushed down.

My accepting warrior, my hero true...

Hi Susie,

I know you're a really talented poet. That simply goes without saying... But I realized something else as I read this one. With what you and H have to deal with, it takes an incredible amount of courage to make the choice to live, every day. And it's pretty obvious that you both have that. I know - he's been fighting with this for a long time. But that is what stands out - you're not quitters.

You're heroes.

Thanks Walt, very generous and extravagant comments. We work hard at keeping up our spirits everyday, making each day the best we can and we have some really lovely times, even though they are very different than before. My sincere wishes to you.

It is my true belief that Hamada gains strength from words such as these. Men need to feel heroic, especially when we're unable to physically do so. Knowing that you see him the way you do, and respect his (and your) battle is some strong medicine indeed!

Well thank you Micheal. Hamada does enjoy my poems very much, and often asks me to read one for him. The poems of his home country of Egypt, take him back to the times when he was well and strong - I enjoy to see him dreaming of the wonderful times we had - anyway I only ever see him the way he was, and he does still have the wonderful smile ! All Sincere Wishes to you.

My Dear Susie,
Every now and then I visit you here, maybe to find in your words some of the courage I lack sometimes. You're both an example, and once again I wish you both all the luck in the world.
I also thank you for visiting my "emotions"... It's true, I'm in love after so many years! But now comes the difficult part of it. I live in Portugal, she lives in Slovakia, and we both want to live together in a different country. We want to start from zero, but its easier said than done... Anyway, sometimes in life we feel that sparkle, and I think that's preciselly when we realise we should not let go...
A kiss.

There's no doubt you are both heroes and a shining light to the rest of us. I wonder how you do this day after day - I am finding it hard to browse your whole blog at one time because of the intense emotions.
